Medical Training for Physicians

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate (ECFMG) is the organization that evaluates the qualifications of international medical graduates and certifies their readiness to engage in a U.S. program of Graduate Medical Education (GME).

One visa commonly used by foreign national physicians is the J-1, a temporary non-immigrant visa reserved for participants in the Exchange Visitor Program. Through the Training Physician J-1 program foreign physicians participate in U.S. graduate medical education programs and training at accredited U.S. schools of medicine. The  ECFMG Exchange Visitor Sponsorship Program (EVSP), issues the J-1 eligibility document or Form DS-2019 for physicians to apply for the J visa  at a U.S. Consulate abroad or for the change of status within the United States, as applicable.
