More than 1,100 students to graduate from UTHealth

HOUSTON-(April 24, 2012)- Distinguished health professionals will address students, faculty, staff and guests when the six professional schools at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) hold 2012 commencement ceremonies, graduating more than 1,100 students. Denton A. Cooley, M.D., surgeon-in-chief, founder and president emeritus of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital; and Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, are among this year’s commencement speakers. Detailed information for each commencement event is listed below:

UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics
When: 4 p.m. Thursday, May 3
Where: Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building, Beth Robertson Auditorium, 1825 Pressler Street
Number of graduates: 30
Commencement speaker: John Riggs, M.D., medical director of clinical information systems at the Harris County Hospital District, associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the UTHealth Medical School and a graduate and adjunct professor at the UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics

UTHealth School of Nursing
When: 7 p.m. Friday, May 4
Where: George R. Brown Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B3, 1001 Avenida de las Americas
Number of graduates: 277
Commencement speaker: Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, M.D., president ad interim of UTHealth and dean of the UTHealth Medical School

Note: The School of Nursing also will host an awards and pinning ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3 at the Bayou City Event Center, 9401 Knight Road. PARTNERS provides pins for all undergraduate nursing students.

The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

Number of graduates: 70
Commencement speaker: Mary-Claire King, Ph.D., professor of genome sciences and medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine

The University of Texas School of Public Health
When: 2 p.m. Saturday, May 5
Where: Bayou City Event Center, 9401 Knight Road
Number of graduates: 430 – the largest graduating class in the school’s history
Commencement speaker: Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund

UTHealth School of Dentistry
When: 2 p.m. Friday, May 18
Where: University of Houston, Cullen Performance Hall
Number of graduates: 80 DDS students, 38 Dental Hygiene students and 38 Advanced Education students
Commencement speaker: Richard A. Box, DDS, Texas A&M Board of Regents chair and graduate of the Class of 1966 of the UTHealth School of Dentistry

UTHealth Medical School
When: 4 p.m. Friday, May 25
Where: George R. Brown Convention Center, Assembly Hall, 1001 Avenida de las Americas
Number of graduates: 216
Commencement speaker: Denton A. Cooley, M.D., surgeon-in-chief, founder and president emeritus of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital
