UTHealth Named One of Houston’s Top Workplaces
Houston – (Nov. 12, 2012) – The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) has been recognized as a Houston Top Workplace for 2012 for the third straight year, according to a survey published in the Houston Chronicle.
“When one’s entire ‘company’ mission is to serve others, such as ours, it is particularly gratifying to know that our faculty and staff do feel supported and heard by their leadership,” said Giuseppe N. Colasurdo, M.D., president of UTHealth. “We spend our work lives caring for others – our students, our research groups, our patients – and as this survey demonstrates, our internal community is as committed to one another as they are to the broader community they serve.”
UTHealth ranked No. 35 in the Large Company category out of 51 participants for companies and organizations with more than 500 employees. The survey, conducted by Workplace Dynamics, was expanded to the top 150 local companies this year and measured six factors: connection, direction, execution, work, manager and pay and benefits–and UTHealth scored among the top 40 on all six factors.
Among UTHealth employees who took the survey, there was a 52 percent completion rate, compared to 41 percent in 2011. “Survey completion rates, themselves, are important,” said Eric Fernette, vice president of Human Resources at UTHealth. “A high completion rate indicates that employees take the time to answer thoughtfully and honestly, want their institution to improve and want it to continue to do well. They care, and that’s the mark of a successful organization.”
Similar to last year’s survey, participants once again said benefits, job flexibility, work/life balance and respect for supervisors were among the reasons UTHealth is a top workplace. “The survey confirms what we know about our institution – it is the people of UTHealth who make the organization great and the culture of collaboration and caring that keeps us coming back to work each day,” said Colasurdo.
Fernette sums up the importance of this designation by saying, “While awards are appreciated, and good for recruitment, the real prize is working with individuals who are dedicated to improving the health of our country and who love the work that they do.”
