HOUSTON – (Nov. 12, 2012) - Herbert Fred, M.D., professor of internal medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School , recently received the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians (ACP), Texas Chapter.

The Laureate Award, the highest recognition a state chapter can give, honors “those Fellows and Masters of the College who have demonstrated by their example and conduct an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, or research and in service to their community, their Chapter, and the American College of Physicians.”

Fred received his Mastership from the American College of Physicians in 2004 when he also received the ACP Distinguished Teaching Award.

He received this most recent honor at the society’s annual meeting.

“It was a wonderful affair, and they treated me royally,” Fred said, adding that he received a standing ovation from the 275 people in attendance. “The American College of Physicians is the largest medical specialty professional organization in the world, and they are very active in helping medical students and house officers start their careers.”

Fred has devoted his career of 60 years to medical education. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed post-graduate training at the University of Utah. He joined the Medical School in 1971 and is a professor of internal medicine.

His numerous awards include the Benjy F. Brooks, M.D., Outstanding Clinical Faculty Award from the Medical School’s Alumni Association, the 2005 TIAA-CREF Distinguished Medical Educator Award, and the Federation of State Medical Boards Award for Excellence in Editorial Writing.

The mission of the Texas Chapter of the ACP is to promote quality health care for all Texas by strengthening the practice of internal medicine.
