UTHealth Medical School dean announces department chair appointments
HOUSTON – (May 1, 2013) – Giuseppe Colasurdo, M.D., dean of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, has announced the appointment of two new department chairs for the UTHealth Medical School.
Theresa Koehler, Ph.D., holder of the Herbert L. and Margaret W. DuPont Distinguished Professor in Biomedical Science, has been named chair of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, effective April 1, 2013. She joined the UTHealth Medical School in 1991 and has been serving as interim chair of the department since September 2011. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts and did a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Her research interest is the Bacillus cereus group species.
David Gorenstein, Ph.D., holder of the James T. Willerson Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Research, has been named chair of the Department of NanoMedicine and BioMedical Engineering, effective April 1, 2013. He joined UTHealth in 2009 as professor and deputy director of the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM) for the Prevention of Human Diseases. He has been serving as interim chair of the department since July 2011 and also serves as associate dean for research of the Medical School and director of the IMM’s Center for Proteomics and Systems Biology. He received his doctorate degree from Harvard University. His research interests include translational research programs in proteomics and nanomedicine for both diagnostics and therapeutics, particularly in cancer.
“Dr. Koehler and Dr. Gorenstein are outstanding leaders who have proven their dedication to this school. I am confident that they will successfully grow and serve their departments,” Colasurdo said.
